We are proud to announce Queer Botany will host a botanical drawing session focusing on queerness and nature as part of our Seniors Art School 2023 season. Led by designer and illustrator Edward Luke Thrush, the workshops will create a space for participants to share stories and experiences about the plants in Southwark Park and Southwark Park Galleries’ garden, and to learn botanical drawing through the medium of pen and ink – playing with both expressional and intricate styles of recording cuttings.

Open to all with inquisitive and open minds over the age of 55.
No prior skills, experience or knowledge needed. Everyone welcome.
Materials will be provided.

About //

Queer Botany is an ecocritical project that studies and affirms connections between queerness and nature. The project emerges from the theoretical lens of queer ecology, which brings together queer theory and eco-criticism. Queer Botany particularly focuses on the LGBTQ+ community and connecting to plant life. The project aims to share marginalised perspectives and support more diverse representations in the environmental movement and the outdoors.

Queer Botany has collaborated with Chelsea Physic Garden on A Dash of Lavender: Celebrating LGBTQ+ History Month, hosted online botanical drawing sessions, installed temporary interpretive displays at the Walthamstow Marshes, and held guided tours talking about plants from a queer perspective. Queer Botany has worked with Fringe! Queer Film & Art Festival, Elop, and Outcome: Islington Mind.

Edward Luke Thrush is a designer, illustrator and general creative handyman based between Birmingham and London.

Working both individually, and also as part of creative duo ‘Window Artists’, ELT aims to bring exciting and unusual concepts to life though carefully thought-out design, utilising his love for intricate penmanship and bold colour-blocking.
