Generative Environments is a phrase used by Brian Massumi and Erin Manning in their book ‘Thought in the Act’ (2014) which treats artistic practice as a form of thinking. The works in this exhibition interrogate such themes as embodiment, materiality and meaning: traversing thresholds of listening, between the human and non-human, the self and other, in pieces that span installation, composition and performance. This exhibition and events programme brings together the work of the six graduating students from the MA Sound Arts at London College of Communication, UAL and is part of the London College of Communication postgraduate Shows 2017. The exhibition presents an opportunity to experience the rich diversity of practices emerging from this course, now in its tenth year.
Julian Brown’s mixed media installation sets up a series of encounters that explore the relationship between listener and environment through various modalities of listening. Chase Coley’s instrument-making practice is a point of departure that interrogates the choreography of movements, actions and intentions, to produce new performance both with and beyond these instruments and their sculptural display. Roberta Derenzio’s composition pictures her mind as eight rooms each with their own persona. The visitor can enter these conceptual spaces in the form of a surround sound installation and live performance. Chuky Omo’s immersive installation interrogates the notion of ‘nowness’, meaning-making and the creation of internal experience, and draws out similarities and differences in our understanding of the same physical space. Steve Walker’s multi-channel composition is a sonic portrait of Southwark Park that surrounds the exhibition space. It is the culmination of the artist’s extensive research into its social history, contemporary soundscapes and chance encounters with local people, exploring both conventional and non-conventional narratives of the park and its community. Zitong Ye’s work explores the distances and proximities between London and her Chinese home, mixing Cantonese, Mandarin and English in textual work and installation.
PERFORMANCES:
During the PREVIEW on Sunday 3 December there will be live performances by Chase Coley, Roberta Derenzio and Chuky Omo. Roberta Derenzio will perform again at 3.15pm on Sunday 10 December.

research Symposium // Saturday 9 December // 2-4pm
The symposium will focus on the thematic of ‘generative environments’, in relation to the works in the exhibition. With talks from Tom Davis and Maria Papadomanolaki, as well as contributions from the artists and the Course Leader Thomas Gardner, chaired by Salomé Voegelin. The symposium will also be an opportunity to engage directly with the artists’ research, with the display of their research posters and through direct conversation, a unique facet of the course. It will end with a performance by Chase Coley.
Dr Tom Davis is an instrument builder, improviser and sound artist. His artistic output involves the creation of technologically-led environments for interaction. He has performed and exhibited across Europe and in the US. Davis is currently a Senior Lecturer at the University of Bournemouth and holds a PhD from SARC, Belfast.
Maria Papadomanolaki is a Greek sound practitioner and researcher currently based in London. Her work and research focus on creating collaborative listening experiences, often in sites associated with transience. Either in the form of telemetatic soundwalks, outdoors listening events, durational broadcasts or workshops, Papadomanolaki is interested in investigating sound in response to place-making, perception and memory. Papadomanolaki has presented her work and research at galleries, conferences and festivals in Europe, UK and the US. She is a founding member of SoundCamp collective and has co-edited the publications Transmission Arts: Artists & Airwaves (PAJ Publications, 2011) and sounds remote (SoundCamp/Uniformbooks, 2016).
